Shore Street Strength: a private personal training studio near the Shore in Leith, for people who don't like gyms

A woman in her fifties partway through a deadlift in the brick-walled studio, chalk on her hands, with Rory standing beside her at the edge of the frame

I sat in the car outside for ten minutes the first time, and I needn't have.

Told by people like you

Three people who train here, in their own words. None of them liked gyms either.

Priya carrying a kettlebell across the studio floor, smiling, with Ailsa walking half a step behind her

I hadn't done anything for my own body in a year. In the first session Ailsa mostly asked me how I was sleeping.

My son was nine months old and I couldn't lift the pram into the boot without my back complaining about it. I'd never set foot in a gym and I wasn't going to start in one full of twenty-year-olds.

Here it's just the two of you in the room. Ailsa started me with a kettlebell I could carry comfortably and we built from there, slowly, with a lot of talking in between. Nobody's watching. There's no mirror to catch yourself in.

Now I lift the pram, the shopping and the boy without thinking about it. Mostly, though, it's an hour a week that's mine.

I'd been told to be careful with the knee so often that I'd stopped doing anything at all.

I did my knee in stepping off a kerb, of all things, two years ago. Once the physio had signed me off I was frightened of it. Frightened of stairs, frightened of the garden, certainly frightened of a barbell.

Rory had me tell him exactly what the knee would and wouldn't do before I touched anything. We started with a wooden box and a bit of bodyweight. He stood beside me for every rep for the first few weeks, and then one day I noticed he'd stepped back a pace.

I'm sixty-one and I carry the compost bags up the garden now without a second thought. That's the whole point, for me.

I'm forty-seven and I'd never lifted a weight. I thought it was something you had to start young.

I'd tried gyms three times. Each time I joined in January, went twice, and paid for a year of not going. The rooms were loud and full of people who seemed to know what they were doing.

This is a warehouse unit with a rack, a few bars and a window onto the water. Ailsa showed me how to hold the bar and where to put my feet, and let me get it wrong without making anything of it. We laughed a fair bit. It's the only exercise I've ever kept up.

I feel steadier now, on my feet and generally. I'm not training for anything. I just like being strong.

What this place is

A private personal training studio in an old warehouse unit near the Shore in Leith. Two trainers, Ailsa and Rory. One-to-one sessions and pairs, and that's all we do.

There are no members. When you're here, the room is yours: no one on the next machine, no mirrors full of strangers, no one to measure yourself against. There's no contract either. You pay for sessions, and you stop whenever you like.

Most people who come through the door have never lifted a bar, or haven't in twenty years. That's who the place was set up for in 2019, and it still is.

Private studio · No members · One-to-one and pairs only · No mirrors · Open since 2019

Ailsa and Rory

Ailsa and Rory in the studio, talking with a client who is sitting on a bench between sets

Nearly everyone tells me in the first five minutes that they're not a gym person. That's fine. This isn't a gym.

Ailsa Grant

personal trainer

I'll stand beside you for every set until you don't need me there. Most people are surprised how soon that is.

Rory MacLeod

personal trainer

Both hold Level 3 personal training qualifications, and both have been here since the door opened in 2019. More about Ailsa and Rory, told the same way.
